AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATIONS

Automobile Associations are a group of members who support improvements of conditions for motorists (i.e. roads conditions, safety, laws etc.).  Associations would also support members with services such as roadside assistance (i.e. in cases of automobile breakdown), maps, trip planning, insurance etc..

Association badges had a bolt fixing or a tang/bar at the bottom; or else were fixed to the automobile from the back of the badge. Association badges denoted membership to the Association and generally motorbikes had smaller sized emblems.

The Automobile Club of Great Britain started in 1898 and when in 1907, King Edward VII granted his Royal patronage it became the Royal Automobile Club of Great Britain, this allowed the club to use the word "Royal" in it's name and to display the monarchs crown, subsequent monarchs continued the patronage and sometimes their Crown was substituted. Likewise in Australia, when an Association was granted Royal patronage they too were called a Royal Automobile Association.

This collection are mostly Australian Automobile Associations ...
